This project features the renovation of a 1907 dairy barn on the St. Paul Campus, providing the College of Veterinary Medicine with much-needed classrooms, seminar space, offices, and conference rooms. The original exterior Jacobean style half timber, stucco and brick Tudor elements were restored and the original windows were retained, restored and brought to energy code compliance through the installation of exterior storm windows. The original ventilation cupola was also retained and restored. The roof was replaced and brought to meet energy code requirements through the addition of a ventilated rigid insulation system and the roof shingles were replaced with historically sympathetic asphalt shingles.
The adaptive reuse of the interior retained the original three-section division on the first floor, and the original “Carriage Drive” was used as a gallery and common gathering space. The east portion of the building now includes a seminar room and common seating area with food service for campus-wide use, and the west portion of the building was renovated to provide vertical circulation, offices and toilet facilities. The upper level loft includes a 110 student classroom, a high-tech classroom, seminar room, student lounge and amenity area, and toilet facilities. Where possible, the original character defining interior elements such as the brick walls of the gallery and the exposed timbers and framing of the loft remain exposed. |
