This project provided a complete renovation of the historic Mineral Resources Research Center (MRRC), a 79-year-old building in the historic Knoll District of the Minneapolis Campus. The exterior of the building was repaired and returned to its original 1924 appearance. The interior of the building was remodeled to provide specialized laboratory space, group meeting rooms for preK-12 outreach, and a variety of modern faculty, research and teaching assistant offices. Infill floors were added in existing high bay space to provide additional floor area to accommodate the programs. The mechanical, electrical, circulation and infrastructure were replaced in their entirety. All hazardous materials, including asbestos and mercury, was abated. All code deficiencies were corrected and fire and life safety requirements were met.
The renovated building houses three units of the College of Education and Human Development that pursue research and outreach in the areas of reading and literacy, special education, accountability and assessment, and early childhood education: 1) the department of Educational Psychology, 2) the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI), and 3) the Center for Early Educational Development (CEED). These three units relocated from four different buildings on the Minneapolis East Bank Campus.
