The Equine Center is located on the east-side of the St. Paul Campus at the edge of the existing animal facilities and the agricultural field plots. The 66,000 gross square foot Equine Center is a new, single story facility consisting of a lameness research and clinical services area, a research barn, and an indoor riding arena with an attached conference center. The outdoor program space includes an outdoor riding arena, round pen, and four paddocks, as well as horse trailer drop off and parking, and general visitor parking. The new building also connects to an existing equipment storage building, which will be used for equine breeding research and bulk storage of hay, feed and stall bedding.
The building is designed to be a high-class, state-of-the-art equine facility, using effective, energy efficient, and affordable construction systems. The design includes a durable steel structure, masonry and metal panel side walls, and an attractive standing seam roof. Rooflines are sloping with intersecting gables and steps that create a strong architectural composition. There will be functioning cupolas, a covered entry canopy, a variety of expressive exterior doors and stall windows, skylights, and white paddock fencing.
The clinical services facility includes durable, easily maintained finishes and systems, with a front lobby area, six clinical horse stalls, four exam rooms, and a complete surgical suite. In addition, there will be facilities for radiology, pharmacy, the breeding program, and a high-speed equine treadmill and underwater treadmill. The research barn contains over two dozen individual horse stalls and storage facilities, and is designed for natural ventilation and sunlight in order to provide a high-quality environment for the horse population living there. The indoor arena is a generously vaulted open structure with a large fenced riding ring and spectator seating. Attached to the arena is a conference facility with its own entrance. The arena and conference center are intended to also accommodate the We-Can-Ride program.
