Status Progress Reports for Medical BioSciences Building

May 2008

Superstructure work continues. Level 3 forming & pouring was complete on May 16th. Level 4 forming is nearing completion; concrete pouring is scheduled for the first week in June. Steam vault connections to University steam service are complete. The contractor will begin backfilling along the west side during the week ahead.

April 2008

Level 2 pan and joist formwork was complete by mid-month. Pouring of the concrete slab followed, marking the first of six pours that form the overall building superstructure. The concrete steam vault was placed below grade along the west foundation. Connections to University steam service will progress through May. Construction continues on the deep steam tunnel and infrastructure building. The contractor has mined approximately 35 feet to the west and 280 feet to the east inside the deep steam tunnel.

March 2008

Construction continues on building footings, foundation, and superstructure. During March, all footings will be poured and backfilled; several columns will be poured as well. Construction continues on deep steam tunnel and infrastructure building. The contractor has mined 80 feet down at the Gateway Plaza staging area to the eventual deep tunnel elevation and has progressed approximately 35 feet to the west and 210 feet to the east.

February 2008

Construction began on the main building footings, foundation, and superstructure. Work continues on deep steam tunnel and infrastructure building. The contractor has mined 80 feet down at the Gateway Plaza staging area to the eventual deep tunnel elevation and has progressed approximately 35 feet to the west and 20 feet to the east.

January 2008

The "Medical Biosciences Building: Virtual Groundbreaking" was presented during the 2008 State of the AHC.

September 2007

Shallow steam tunnel work at Oak Street and University Avenue is progressing with approximately 140' of the jacked tunnel in place beneath University Avenue. Infrastructure efforts will transition toward deep steam tunneling as shallow work concludes in the upcoming months.

May 2007

The Design Development phase continues with drawings anticipated to be issued in July for both the main building and the infrastructure building. Bid Package #1 encompassing the shallow steam tunnel work at Oak Street and University Avenue has been awarded by Kraus Anderson to Thomas & Sons and is under construction.

February 2007

The project team has transitioned into the Design Development phase. Meetings are underway to refine scope of work, and detailed plans are being developed between project architects and future building users.

January 2007

The schematic design phase is progressing. Semi-final documents will be reviewed by the project team during February, and presentation of the final version remains scheduled for the March Board of Regents Facilities Committee meeting. Infrastructure planning continues with direction to design and construct a combined MBB/Stadium chilled water plant, and incorporate enhancements to a new deep steam tunnel that will serve the area.

December 2006

The schematic design phase continues. Stacking diagrams have been approved, detailed floor layouts continue to evolve, and options for the initial exterior image have been presented.

November 2006

The Academic Health Center has determined that the building will house the Center for Memory Research and Care, the Neurodegenerative Research Group, the Neuromuscular Research Group, and Immunology. The program validation phase is complete and schematic design is underway.

October 2006

The Program Validation / Schematic Design Phase continues with Perkins+Will providing several options for the building orientation on the site, and an east/west orientation along 6th Street was selected. Initial stacking diagrams have also been presented and meetings with the building users continue.

September 2006

Kraus-Anderson was selected as Construction Manager at Risk. The Program Validation Phase continues as meetings with the Academic Health Center stakeholders are taking place. The project team is also working with Capital Planning  and the TCF Bank Stadium design team to confirm the boundaries of the Medical Biosciences Building site and address further developments in the Gateway East District master plan.

August 2006

The team of Perkins + Will / Affiliated Engineers have been selected as the project architects and engineers respectively. The Program Verification and Schematic Design Phases have begun. Several proposals were received in response to the Request for Proposals for Construction Manager at Risk. A selection will be made within the next month.

June 2006

The 2006 state legislature approved this project in the bonding bill signed by the Governor on June 1, providing $40 million in state funding. A Request for Proposals for architectural services will be issued through the State Designer Selection Board in late June.
