The project is to erect and connect two Vestas V82 1.65 megawatt wind turbines, one at the Morris campus (UMM) and the other at West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC). An existing wind turbine was installed at WCROC in 2005. It was the first large-scale wind research turbine at a U.S. public university and began generating power March 7, 2005. The new turbine at UMM is being funded and supported by the University of Minnesota, Morris along with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibway, and will be erected on the north side of campus and connected to the campus electrical distribution system via direct buried underground electrical feeder and communication lines. Incongunction with the erection of the turbine at Morris, an electrical infrastructure upgrade of a high voltage switchgear will be installed to improve electrical power distribution. The new turbine at WCROC will be located 1400 feet south of the existing turbine and will be connected to the existing wind turbine electrical distribution network.
